How to Eliminate Hemp’s Earthy Taste

13 June 2025

Have you ever noticed that hemp tastes like, well, hemp? The earthy taste comes from the compounds in the hemp plant and from its cultivation methods.

We know hemp’s flavor is not everyone’s cup of tea, which highlights the importance of making hemp more palatable to reach a wider audience. As a result, we’re focused on how to remove the hemp flavor from edibles.

The typical culinary hemp flavoring techniques in this industry are flavor masking and flavor enhancing. The former is meant to neutralize the taste of hemp, while the latter is about creating complementary flavor profiles.

For example, we have a Purple Haze lemonade that does both by combining hibiscus (for tartness), ginger (spicy), manuka honey (caramel), grenadine (fruity) and butterfly pea (floral).

Regarding hemp bakery goods, we make items like Oreo cupcakes and white chocolate macadamia cookies that are decadent enough to mute the hemp flavor. Our recipes make our products far superior in taste than those homemade pot brownies you may have tried.

For absorption in the body of CBD, which is a fat-soluble compound from hemp, the general method is to infuse it into a carrier oil, which serves as a vehicle. Some oils, like MCT oil, are neutral in flavor, while others, like olive oil, are richer in flavor. Either way, the carrier oils also contribute to reducing the hemp flavor in edibles.

So, as you can see, hemp doesn’t need to taste the way it does. We like to tell our customers that it can be a culinary delight.
